Gum Disease Can Contribute to Heart Disease and Even Stroke
Until recently, it was thought the worst that could result from chronic gum disease was losing your teeth. But medical research has now linked gum infection to stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. These health problems are life threatening, and it is now clear that bacterial infection of the gums is a very serious matter. The American Dental Association projects that 80% of adult Americans have gum disease. As a result, dentists consider this to be a national epidemic.
The American Academy of Periodontology reports, “studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases.” The bacteria affecting the gums travels throughout the bloodstream to vital organs and can worsen these conditions.
